Single Parenting and Adolescent Substance Abuse

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between single parenting and adolescent substance abuse. In an effort to distinguish the relationship single parenting has with adolescent substance abuse from the relationship between non-single parenting and adolescent substance abuse, this study examined both family structures. The present study sought to explore: the relationship various family factors (family structure, family cohesion, and substance use in the home ( ad parenting factors (parent supervision, parent stress, and parent participation in treatment) had with adolescent substance abuse. To conduct this study, existing data collected at the Adolescent Health ad Resource Center (AHRC) was analyzed. Data investigated the family factors and parenting factors being studied and their associations with adolescent substance abuse using 5-tests and Pearson Correlations. Family structure was nota associated with adolescent substance abuse. Adolescents indicated an identical amount of substance use (0.1) and substance use problems (1.8) among both family structures. single parents reported more days of stress (25.4) than non-single parents (23.3) p= 42; more minutes of case management (65.7) than non-single parents (61) p= .82; and an additional hour of treatment (21) than non-single parents (20) p= .078.
