Eliminating Health and Mental Disparities Through Organizational Cultural Competence

Abstract

There are several commonly known areas of health where universal disparities persist, however, racial and ethnic disparities are limited to minority groups. A prime example where disparities exist, aside from the top six diseases that plague minorities, is the mental health arena. Some researchers attribute the fact that minorities have higher incidences, mortality rates and lower survival rates in mental health to racial and ethnic disparities. However, little research has been done on the burden of mental illness among minority groups. The main objectives of this project are: 1) to explore the role of organizational cultural competence in addressing health and mental health disparities; 2) to provide an overview of racial and ethnic disparities in health and mental health; and 3) explore how the findings of an organization's cultural competence self-assessment can be used to craft interventions to increase cultural competence. Based on the literature review, the lack of cultural competence in mental health setting contributes to racial and ethnic disparities in mental health.
