Abstract

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is responsible for various functions including working memory, executive functions, abstract thinking and attention. There is research suggesting that it may play an important role in consent capacity. Consent Capacity is the ability of participants to ethically consent to research. Consent appreciation is applying information correctly to one’s self. The association between the DLPFC and appreciation of the capacity to consent process was assessed. In this study, 2 patients with damage to the DLPFC were compared with 10 healthy adults that were age- and education-matched to the patients. Patients read hypothetical research studies about meningitis and dental care. Responses from the interviews were documented and analyzed highlighting the effect lesions may have in specific areas of the DLPFC. This study will increase the likelihood of a direct relationship between the DLPFC and the mechanisms needed for appropriate appreciation in the consent process despite limitations. Limitation in this study included but weren’t limited to small sample population and lack of focal lesions in the DLPFC. Future studies of the DLPFC and its connection to the appreciation consent process are needed to improve both the definition of appreciation and its application. The clarification of the ethics portion of research will benefit as will the sheer numbers of participants in studies.
