The Association between Exercise Barriers and Motives to Exercise

Abstract

The objective of this survey study was to identify exercise barriers that are most strongly associated with motives to exercise to develop health promotion intervention strategies. Physical Inactivity is a major problem that has been associated with chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Research suggests that low levels of physical activity leads to a greater risk of a heart attack or stroke to occur than smoking, obesity, hypertension, or high cholesterol levels (Blair, 2009). We analyzed this survey study based on 52 individual's responses from the surrounding local community (Iowa City and Coralville,Iowa) conducted over a 2 week period. This study asked individuals: demographic questions, reasons for exercise, barriers to exercise, how specific moods best describe the individual, physical activity readiness, and daily physical activity. It was anticipated that those who exercise for fun will have fewer barriers than those who exercise primarily for weight loss. Once exercise motives and barriers are identified, the investigators will use descriptive statistics (median, mean and variances) for each instrument's subscales to analyze the associations between constructs and their subscales. This research will provide valuable information to create programs that promote physical activity in a targeted manner."
