Globalization and Latino Musicians in Mainstream American Popular Music: A Lyrical Analysis

Abstract

Globalization has led to the interconnection of nations, peoples and cultures. It is generally assumed that the United States is the primary driver of globalization which exports its culture to all parts of the world. However, the United States is not immune from globalization. Music in the United States is affected by music from other parts of the world. This is especially true of Latin music that comes mostly from Puerto Rico as well as from Mexico, Colombia, and Cuba. Since Latin music has become a prominent part of mainstream American culture, understanding the message of the popular Latin Musicians reveals a lot about the forces that affect the growing Latin community in the United States. The aim of this project was to study the lyrics themes of the most popular Latin musicians in the United States as determined by the Latin Grammys Awards and the Billboard Magazine's Top Hot 100 songs. The musicians studied are Enrique Martin (Ricky Martin) of Puerto Rico, Shakira of Colombia, Juan Esteban (Juanes) of Colombia, Gloria Estefan of Cuba, and Carlos Santana of Mexico. The main themes that emerged from the study were: love and relationships, alienation and loneliness, immigration and immigrants, family, culture, identity and religion, as well as life and death. It was found that the themes of the musicians reflected their status as bilingual, bi-cultural stars whose "Spanglish" (mixture of Spanish and English) straddled American and Latin cultures. This study showed that Latin musicians affect the culture of the United States as much as the United States affects the lives of Latin musicians.
