My dissertation uses French critical theory to explain the prevalence of autobiographical and biographical fictions in contemporary French literature. I demonstrate that the popularity of autobiographical narratives in the contemporary French novel follows the collapse of grand ideologies, and reflects an emerging significance of the human subject at the intersection of the postcolonial era, the consumerist society, and the redefinition of genders.
