Peg Nopoulos, professor of psychiatry and faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience, has research expertise in structural brain imaging using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). She is one of the few scientists at The University of Iowa doing this work in a childhood population.

Nopoulos and the graduate students in her lab study developmental disorders in children born prematurely and those who are born with clefts of the lip and/or palate.

“The learning environment at Iowa has been unparalleled in its opportunity for cutting edge research technologies, but more importantly for the culture of collaboration – working together in teams to tackle problems,” Nopoulos said.

Training others has been a major component of Nopoulos’ career. From 2001 to 2005, she developed and directed the Iowa Medical Student Research Program. She currently is the director of the Iowa Doris Duke Clinical Fellowship Program, a program for medical students doing clinical research.
