The Mayor Monolith: the Differences within America's Black Female Mayors

Abstract

In the United States there are over 1,400 seats for Mayor in cities with populations of over 30,000, and it wasn't until 1967 that the first Black mayor was elected. Today there are more than 40 Black mayors serving in 100 of the largest cities in the nation. Of them, nine are Black women - a historic number which only continues to grow. Much of the information surrounding these women lies in reporting articles, social media posts, and news stories. Much of what we've seen is a lumping together of these mayors solely based upon the fact that they're Black women. This study focuses on the incumbent Black female mayors in nine major United States cities. The objective of this study is to build a profile focusing upon their region of the nation, politics, and public approval, and to highlight the particular challenges they face as a result of these factors.
