Biography

Despite the expectation and desire of elementary school teachers to be culturally relevant (to be able to respond to their students’ cultural practices and needs in the classroom), little is known about how they are expected to gain the cultural knowledge needed in order to embrace culturally relevant pedagogy. My research describes teachers’ perceptions and discourses about cultural/family literacy practices during a professional development course on cultural/family literacies and through participation in a home visit project.
