Abstract
In this talk, I offer an overview of my career with an emphasis on my research which is roughly at the intersection of computational linguistics and text analytics. Many individuals — whether they realize it or not — have profoundly influenced my path. Looking back, I also recognize the roles of serendipity and good fortune. As with most careers, the retrospective view often appears more insightful than the prospective one. Opportunities have come my way — some taken, others not — bringing to mind Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken.” My aim is to highlight some key points along the path I did choose and to share how I made certain decisions, to the extent that I understand them myself. Ultimately, I hope these reflections provide the audience with a few useful insights for shaping their own careers.
