Matthew Kliegl

Matthew Kliegl is a Master’s student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa, where he conducts research under the guidance of Dr. Larry Weber. His work focuses on developing effective fish passage solutions at dams along the Mississippi River, utilizing river hydraulics and computational fluid dynamics modeling to support ecological connectivity.

Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Matthew earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Iowa in May 2024. During his undergraduate studies, he had the unique opportunity to serve as Herky the Hawk, the University’s mascot, representing the institution at athletic events, public engagements, and campus functions.

Matthew is scheduled to defend his thesis in November and will graduate in December. Following graduation, he plans to begin his professional career in private industry as a Water Resources Engineer, with intentions to relocate to Chicago. Outside of academics and engineering, Matthew enjoys golfing, playing piano, and staying active through basketball and volleyball. He’s also an avid reader with a passion for lifelong learning.
