Sea spray aerosol represents one of the largest natural sources of aerosol and consequently impacts global climate. My dissertation quantifies saccharide enrichment from the ocean to aerosol using controlled laboratory studies. Simple model systems demonstrate surface activity as well as interactions with calcium and protein increase saccharide enrichment. Complex seawater experiments indicate bacterial abundance influences saccharide enrichment. These results are important to understand and better model the climate relevant properties of sea spray aerosol.
