Radiation therapy (RT) is often used to treat patients with lung cancer; however, irradiation of the surrounding healthy lung tissues during RT may cause damage to the lung. Functional avoidance RT can be used to reduce radiation-induced lung injury by minimizing dose to high-function lung tissues. This dissertation aims to improve functional avoidance RT by developing algorithms for imaging of lung function, and developing image regression algorithms to reduce artifacts in lung function imaging.
