Learning to read Chinese is a labor-intensive process for native English speakers. To understand what makes this process challenging and how native English speakers comprehend Chinese texts, this study uses an exploratory qualitative approach to investigate these questions. Participants read a Chinese text and then explain their comprehension process to the researcher. The result of the study will provide into the complex process of reading Chinese and shed light on Chinese reading instruction.
