Research on counseling leadership suggests that factors such as mentorship, previous leadership experience, identity, and resilience shape leaders and guide leadership practices. Less is known, however, about critical incidents, which are experiences that are considered “a powerful source of counselor development.” Therefore, utilizing the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), the goal of this grounded theory study is to provide a framework to explain how such incidents contribute to a leader’s development, practices, and effectiveness.
