My dissertation research uses gene sequences and geographic locations of pandemic H1N1 influenza viruses to investigate the role of population, cultural and environmental landscapes in the evolution and spread of the virus at different spatial scales. Better understanding of how landscapes drive viral change and diffusion will help us develop intervention strategies before the emergence of new pandemic viruses, thereby minimizing the public health burden from future pandemics.
