In my dissertation I examine how institutional design affects US states. For decades, research in state politics has evaluated how single institutions, affect the relationship between public preferences and state policy. However, substantially less attention has been spent understanding how these institutions collectively affect state policy. I argue that a more holistic understanding of state institutions will provide new insights into our understanding of the role of institutions in how democracy operates in the states.
