My dissertation explores the ways marginalized slaves and other victimized people came together to create new mission communities in Western Tanzania. It centers on the mission communities to examine the translation of Christian texts as a reciprocal process of Africans and European missionaries teaching each other. The dissertation also explores the revival movement, showing how ordinary African Christians mounted a rebellion against the revival movement, preventing born-again pastors and evangelists from holding services in Churches.
