Biography

This research examines global media framing of protests and repression. Applying the structural topic model to original international newspaper data, I find that when covering mass movements in non-democracies, free press focus more on aspects of the events that are dramatic and challenge the status-quo, whereas censored press focus more on aspects favoring stability. However, when the movement takes place in a democracy, free press and censored press converge in their framing of the events.
