A novel compartmental model is used for the prescription opioid epidemic to model the path of addiction over months in Iowa counties. This model allows forward and backward progression through the compartments: susceptible, exposed, dependent, and removed. The model is informed by prescription rates, demographics, overdose death records, possession, distribution and manufacturing arrests, and treatment data. The model will identify factors affecting progression through the model, and evaluate interventions as new data is made available.
