Biography

Age-associated skeletal muscle atrophy and weakness (sarcopenia) affects roughly 25% of individuals >60 years old contributing to disability, frailty, loss of independence and mortality. We and others have observed that the process of autophagy, required for degradation of long-lived, dysfunctional proteins becomes impaired with age contributing to sarcopenia. In my dissertation, I will be investigating how the autophagy proteins ULK1 and ULK2 modulate skeletal muscle function potentially protecting against sarcopenia.
