Autonomous (driverless) vehicles could improve road safety but driving involves communication with other road users too. The goal of my dissertation is to investigate the effectiveness of a nighttime vehicle warning system and a daytime intent display mechanism in communicating with pedestrians and bicyclists through a series of experiments. The results will help us understand the behavioral changes made by various designs choices and contribute to policies on improving traffic safety of vulnerable road users.
