Studying individuals with cognitive impairments is critical for advancing knowledge and treatment of diseases that cause cognitive impairments. This research examines how cognitive impairments impact the ability to consent to research participation. Normal healthy adults and patients with specific cognitive impairments read fictional research studies and interviewed to assess consent abilities. Knowledge gained from this research may allow researchers to personalize the consent processes for participants based off their specific cognitive abilities.
