Establishing proper neural circuits is the foundation upon which cognition, behavior, sensation, and learning rests; failure of which is associated with many neuropsychiatric disorders. My dissertation focuses on gamma-protocadherins (γ-Pcdhs), a family of cell adhesion molecules, and its role in the elaboration of dendrites. I have identified the differential regulation of Wnt signaling, an important neurodevelopmental pathway, by different γ-Pcdh isoforms and the molecular mechanisms through which they act to influence cortical circuit formation.
