My dissertation aims to understand politicians’ criminal justice rhetoric. It contributes to the literature by applying new computational methods to non-traditional data such as political ad videos. It also improves our understanding of how politicians’ gender and race affect their political rhetoric, in particular, what criminal justice topics and target groups they tend to focus on and what vocabulary they decide to use when discussing these topics and groups.
