My dissertation contributes to the growing historical research on the transformative effects of the Civil War era in the Midwest by recentering the crucial role Black veterans played in the fight for equal citizenship and social rights in Midwestern states like Iowa and Kansas. It further contends that Black Midwesterners successfully utilized in many instances the political capital or goodwill accrued by Black veterans’ service in the rhetorical battle for equal rights and social space.
