Safaricom’s M-Pesa, Kenya’s leading mobile money service has become the most recognizable symbol of mobile money in the world. Using interviews, this research examined the role of mobile operators and the value of mobile money in people’s lives. Findings showed mobile money has improved livelihoods and provided a safe haven for savings. Safaricom agents adapted mobile money services to suit people’s habits and remittance patterns, thus increasing the reach of these services within the community.
