The synthesis of complex chemicals and materials, such as pharmaceuticals and plastics, utilize catalysts (often metals attached to organic components called ligands) to assist in the formation of new chemical bonds. Despite years of research, there is a lack of simple models to predict how catalyst modifications affect reactivity and product formation. The work in this thesis focuses on developing actionable models that predict catalyst bonding and reactivity and synthesizing new catalyst ligands.
