I develop a new theory of regional classification in the United States based on geography, political psychology, and public opinion. I use this theory to create a new classification system of American regional subcultures. I apply this new measure to state policy adoption across the United States showing that citizens’ perceptions of states similar to their own plays a role in what policies are adopted in their home state.
