Biography

Women's English-language poetry between 1938-2015, I argue, defines documentary poetics differently from the documentary techniques we are used to seeing in film, journalism, or photography. These poets critically engage specific document cultures: a given document’s visual and stylistic norms, and the norms of its subject matter and material. My project emphasizes poets that foreground and critique textual markers of race, gender, sexuality, and nation within powerful document cultures, from legislative resolutions to the dictionary.
