How does native language affect second language learning? Is there a negative effect when the native language and the second language are very different? What factors influence the native language effect? My dissertation investigates how English-speaking Chinese learners' existing knowledge of the English word "all" affects their understanding of a similar Chinese adverb DOU. I also aim to understand students' perspectives on the learning of this Chinese adverb in this dissertation.
