Patients with serious illnesses that carry a high risk of death, such as advanced cancer, frequently experience symptom burdens and unnecessary suffering. Using real-world clinical notes and natural language processing, this dissertation research explores the palliative care elements like symptom management and spiritual support delivered to patients with advanced cancer near death. Results have the potential to inform practice to enhance end-of-life care to the seriously ill and increase the appropriate end-of-life care utilization.
