Biography
My dissertation examines the ancient rhetorical trope of competition between the visual and verbal arts as it manifests in descriptions of female beauty in the ancient Greek adventure- romance novels. Through close reading and lexical analysis, I show that descriptions of women and men’s emotional/verbal reactions to them force readers to grapple with questions of social morality. These passages yield insights into fiction’s role as reinforcer of the status quo in ancient society.
