Environmental factors can significantly impact the symptoms of neurological disorders caused by genetic mutations. My dissertation focuses on the gut bacteria and its effect on seizure severity in a fruit fly model of epilepsy. I found that a seizure-causing mutation alters bacterial composition in the gut, and that elimination of the gut bacteria can dramatically suppress the seizure phenotype of the mutants. I am currently investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these unexpected findings.
