Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are man-made chemicals that persist in the environment and threaten human health. My research aims to identify bacteria that can degrade PCBs at contaminated sites. Additionally, I aim to identify unique gene sequences and microbe-microbe interactions that these bacteria require to transform PCBs. With the knowledge my research provides, we can more effectively utilize these specialized bacteria to clean up PCB contaminated sediments and reduce PCB exposure risk.
