Cheers to FGF21: The Hormone Helping You Drink Less

Misty Perez is originally from Whittier, California. She did her undergraduate degree at Whittier College, where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. In her first year there, Misty took an introductory biology course taught by Dr. Jenny Davies, who helped her realize her passion for science and inspired her to pursue research.

Misty is a Molecular Medicine PhD candidate under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Potthoff within the department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology. Her dissertation work focuses on how the hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) signals to the brain to lower alcohol intake. She hopes that this will eventually result in the use of FGF21 as a treatment for individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder.

Outside of her research, Misty enjoys spending time with her friends, reading fantasy books, and indoor cycling. She is especially grateful for the support of her family and “lab family”.
