Sanxay Prize

The Sanxay Prize is a $1,000 award presented to an outstanding graduating senior in the University of Iowa's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students must plan to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa or any other university in the summer or fall of 2021. Students planning to attend professional programs are not eligible (e.g. MD, JD).

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must have been born in Iowa or be permanent residents of Iowa.

Nominations can be from any department/program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Applicants must plan to attend graduate school beginning in the summer or fall of 2021.


Departments can nominate up to two students for the award. Either students or faculty can initiate the departmental nomination process but the nomination must be submitted to the Graduate College by the department.

Online nominations must include the following items as separate PDF files:

Student Materials:

  • A brief statement by the student indicating his or her academic interests and plans including a list of graduate programs to which the student has applied. (no more than 500 words).
  • An activity list that includes the student’s research activities, notable extracurricular activities, and awards.

Letter of Support:

  • A letter from the nominating department which provides details concerning the student’s promise for outstanding graduate work.


  • A transcript (can be unofficial) from the University of Iowa.

Applications should be submitted online (link is external) by the student’s department. Students must submit their part of the application materials to their department at least two weeks prior to the Graduate College deadline. Students should check with their department as soon as possible for departmental deadlines as well as to inform them they intend to apply. Applications submitted by the student (and not someone in the department such as the DGS, DEO or grad coordinator) will be voided and not considered. 


The Graduate College will accept applications for Fall 2021 from February 16, 2021 to March 2, 2021.
