Location, Location, Location: What Makes the Macular Retina Unique?

Andrew Voigt is an MD/PhD candidate at the University of Iowa’s Medical Scientist Training Program and Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine. His research explores the mechanisms of blinding diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. To study the visual system, he integrates molecular biology and bioinformatic approaches to measure gene expression in retinal cells. He is supported by an F30 Predoctoral Fellowship through the National Eye Institute. At the conclusion of his PhD training, Andrew will return to medical school before pursuing a residency. His long-term career goal is to conduct research as an academic physician-scientist. Outside of the lab, Andrew enjoys playing/coaching soccer, cooking, and spending time with his family.
