Sean Brobston
Sean Brobston is a third-year PhD Candidate in the Human Toxicology Program at the University of Iowa under the mentorship of Dr. Hans Lehmler. His research investigates how the human gut microbiome influences the toxicity of environmental contaminants, particularly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and how microbial activity can shape adverse outcomes affecting learning and memory. By exploring the interaction between environmental exposures and the gut microbiome, his work seeks to identify new approaches for reducing susceptibility to toxic effects and improving human health.
Sean earned his B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Letourneau University where he conducted and led research spanning microbiology, toxicology, and environmental and analytical chemistry. Although he initially planned to pursue a career in medicine, his interest in his toxicological research redirected his passion towards a career in research.
Through his work, Sean hopes to establish practical, prevention-focused strategies that mitigate the health impacts of environmental contaminants. Outside the lab, he enjoys weightlifting, table tennis, various art, and spending time with his fiancée and friends.
