Liam Campbell

Liam is a Psychology Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Michelle Voss’s Health, Brain, and Cognition Lab. His research focuses on SuperAgers: older adults whose memory resembles people decades younger. He uses neuroimaging to investigate how brain vascular health, brain activity, and rate of brain aging in SuperAgers may explain their exceptional memory.

A first-generation college graduate, Liam's path to cognitive neuroscience began at the University of California, Irvine, where coursework in consciousness, neurobiology, and the mind–body problem fed his interest in exploring the aging brain.

Following graduation, Liam worked for three years at UCLA on the Human Connectome Project in Aging, administering cognitive tests and MRI scans on aging participants of all walks of life. He then managed a clinical trial at UC Davis investigating whether a behavioral intervention in aging adults modifies dementia risk. Moving from observational brain-mapping research to a clinical trial deepened his interest in why people follow different aging trajectories. He hopes his research will illuminate characteristics underlying exceptional memory and ultimately guide research efforts to maintain cognition in late life.

Outside the lab, Liam enjoys building computers, collecting Blu-rays, cycling, thrifting, and coffee shop crawls in search of the perfect pour-over.
