Academic Program: Mass Communication

This dissertation project explores how newspaper journalists in Bangladesh perceive journalism ethics amidst significant limitations imposed on their professional autonomy by political forces. Based on critical discourse analysis of selected codes of ethics and critical thematic analysis of qualitative interviews, the study shows that the journalists in the former British colony take a pragmatic, instead of normative, view of journalism ethics, often settling for the best they can do for society in a restrictive environment.
