Since assessments are key indicators of language ability, it is essential to develop and implement empirically-grounded approaches that reflect language proficiency as accurately as possible. This study explores the effects of multiple-choice and short-answer question formats on English learners’ reading test performance, metacognitive awareness, test-completion processes, and task perceptions. Findings have implications for developing more accurate measures of second language reading proficiency as well as understanding the reading strategies students use on different test formats.
