Plasmas are gases with charged particles. Sound waves can be generated in plasmas, just like in normal gases, and these waves can be absorbed or reflected by surfaces depending on their electrical properties. We measure ion acoustic wave reflections by inducing fluorescence on the plasma with a laser. Fluorescence light intensity is proportional to the density of the plasma, and therefore we can see how the waves affect the ions. This provides a new window for analyzing ion acoustic wave reflection.
