Biofilms colonize more than thousands of medical devices each year in the U.S. causing patients to undergo multiple surgeries to remove and replace the infected implant and costing the states $5 billion problem. We found that be applying a localized thermal shock combined with antibiotics, that have no effect by themselves, can successfully eliminate these infections. This novel finding is crucial in avoiding the multiple surgeries, providing patients with better quality of life, and saving the States billions of dollars.
