Penalized linear mixed models allow researchers to identify genotypes associated with complex phenotypes in the presence of varying levels of population structure and relatedness. However, these models’ performance in the presence of complex and unobserved environmental heterogeneity is not well understood. My research aims to better characterize these models’ performance in human genetic data, and provides a software implementation which improves their speed and accuracy.
