My research questions the assumption that the novel replaced earlier prose romances as the dominant form of fiction. I look beyond the distinction between romance and the novel to examine their shared tropes and conventions, asking: why do certain kinds of stories recur across genres and historical periods? How does this repetition work? What effect does this repetition have the rise of the novel, the decline of the romance, and the shape of narratives.
