F and J visa status
On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a final rule changing how nonimmigrants in F and J status are admitted to and maintain status in the United States. The final rule will be effective on September 15, 2026.
The University of Iowa is actively reviewing the rule and its implications for international students, scholars, academic departments, and administrative processes.
International Programs, the Graduate College, and campus partners are committed to providing timely guidance and supporting members of our international community throughout implementation.
The university will share updated guidance regarding the rule change after completing a full review of the final rule.
