Elderly Women in Keokuk County, Iowa; Barriers to Physical Activity

Abstract

In this research, I will investigate barriers to physical activity of elderly women in Keokuk County, Iowa. The Prevention Research Center (PRC) will utilize qualitative and quantitative information in assessing data. We want to explore barriers that hinder elderly women from engaging in physical activity. The purpose of this study is to find barriers, including physical, mental, social and economical issues that my prevent elderly women from engaging in physical activity. The information will be used in constructing the walking trail in Keokuk county, Iowa. This study is significant because we will look at the factors that hinder elderly women from engaging in physical activity. As a result the proper adjustments can be made to the walking trail to make it more conducive for exercise. This research is also important in preventive care of chronic disease. The research question is: by creating the walking trail, will more elderly women walk? The second questions is, what barriers are hindering most and restricting physical activity? The PRC hypothesis is, that by creating the walking trail there will increase in physical activity for elderly women.
